For some months now, my daughter has been collecting these really cute dolls called Lalaloopsies.
At a glance they do not look like your ordinary rag doll. In fact, they look even odd! Each doll looks different from another. What makes it odd for a doll is, all of them have button eyes.
They remind me of Neil Gaiman’s book, Coraline. If you know this book, you will find it scary to be even playing with one.
These dolls however have bright interesting colors. They have cute eyes and fancy clothes. My daughter’s fondness of these dolls has rubbed on me. What make these dolls cute and lovable to kids? My husband even guessed that perhaps the makers of these dolls were child psychologists as they have successfully owned the hearts of the little girls like my duaghter.
I consulted a few sources and got to know the background and history of these wonderful dolls that my daughter is crazy about.
According to Wikipedia, Lalaloopsy Dolls were first launched in America last 2010, as Bitsy Buttons, featuring eight original, 12 inches rag dolls. It’s tagline was “Sew Magical – Sew Cute“. ” Each doll character was created with a fictional theme, reflecting the day she is born, the fabric she is sewn from, and her pet”.
According one article that I read, MGA ENtertainment, the creator of Lalaloopsy Dolls, originally aimed to promote the idea that old things can be new again, everything can be repur-posed and nothing should go to waste”. Bitsy Buttons was also designed to teach kids that everybody is unique in its own special way.
Shortly after its launch, Bitsy Buttons was changed into Lalaloopsy.
My daughter has actually memorized almost all of the Lalaloopsy Designs. Here are the 8 Original Lalaloopsy Characters. My husband said, if you intend to start a collection, these 8 original designs should be your priority.
Crumbs Sugar Cookie
Jewel Sparkles
Dot Starlight
A year after, on February, 2011, THREE Additional Characters were launched. They were, Patch Treasurechest, Blossom Flowerpot and Tippy Tumbelina. Shortly after, Marina Anchors, Sahara Mirage and Missy Mysterious were added. Later on, a Nurse Doll was launched, to conincide their donation to Red Cross. 1,000 Rosey Bumps and Bruises were given.
As of now, there are 69 Large Lalaloopsy Dolls and 19 Lalaloopsy Little Characters. All of which, my daughter knows. I am not sure if she was able to memorize them all, but for sure, when she sees one she would know one.
As a form of incentive for her, and to honor her heart’s desires, my husband and I have made it as an aspirational gift for her. For every quarter that she does well in school, she will get one lalaloopsy doll of her choice. We started buying her these last May 2013 when she turned 7. One Large Doll and 2 Lalaloopsy Littles were our prize for her awards in school. One Large Doll was a gift from my siblings, and the other was a gift from my husband’s parents. As I am writing this, she already has 3 Lalaloopsy Large Dolls and 2 Lalaloopsy Littles. Aside from forming a childhood collection, I want these dolls to symbolize her dedication and hardwork in school. That is why we are not getting her these in any other occassion. They have to all be related in school achievements.
When she grows up and sees all her Lalaloopsy Dolls, she will be reminded of all the fruits of her labor. These she can also give to her future daughters 🙂 Everytime we go to a mall, the first thing she’ll do is stop by a toystore and Raves at all the Lalaloopsy Dolls in the area. She savors each moment and I can see her silently dreaming of the day when she will finally own ONE more of the doll that she loves.
Check out below a video that i took in one of our trips to the toystore.
I have also listed below all the names of the Lalaloopsy Characters for your reference. Check out their website for more information. http://www.lalaloopsy.com/?section=meet.
